Sir: It seems curious that a majority of peers, who do not vote in national elections, are taking such a principled stand in favour of knowing the names of candidates in each constituency during the 1999 European elections ("Blair vows Lords' defiance will be the last roar of the dinosaurs", 19 November). I wonder how many of them would know the name of the current MEP for their constituency.

In fact, I wonder how many of the hoi polloi who raise their voices in protest against PR know the name of their MEP.
