Tony's farm

Sir: Like Clive Jarvis of Loughborough (letter, 30 September), people in South Wales for some time have been noticing the parallels between the pronouncements and actions of Mr Blair and his party and Orwell's Animal Farm.

At all levels of the party we are observing faithful Labour workhorses, who toiled through the wilderness years, campaigning tirelessly especially at election time, being sent sneakily to the knacker's yard of de-selection and contrived lists of "approved" candidates.

Orwell's pig elite conducted secret negotiations with local farmers who continued to exploit their own farm animals. The pigs and the farmers were to share the fruits of the other animals' labour. Mr Blair seems strangely cosy with the "leaders of industry". The clever pigs' reward was payment in counterfeit notes. Let us hope that this parallel goes no further!

The most memorable sentence is Orwell's conclusion: "The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig and from pig to man again, but already it was impossible to say which was which."
