Letter: Save your energy
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Sir: Your predictions of a business energy tax ("Industry rages at pounds 2bn tax on energy", 23 October) inevitably caused an outbreak of hot air emissions from the fossil fuel industry.
These huffings and puffings should not be allowed to suffocate the birth of a new renewable energy industry which promises not only protection for the climate but also jobs for Britain.
In this respect, your article's reference to the Institute for Public Policy Research's "Blueprint for a Business Energy Tax" might also have mentioned their excellent recommendations that "Relief against energy tax could also be given for new investments in renewable energy projects". Such support for new industries that promise ecological modernisation would be a welcome change from the traditional government support for fossil fuel dinosaurs.
This support continues despite the fact that we have already discovered far more fossil fuels than can be burnt without dangerous climate change.
