Sir: Rob Kenyon suggest that private medicine works to the detriment of the NHS (letter, 8 October). He is wrong. The private sector supplements the NHS by carrying out around 20 per cent of surgical operations, including 20 per cent of heart surgery and nearly 30 per cent of hip replacements. Bupa alone invests pounds 1m each year in medical research and developments. Our hospitals organise training and development programmes for nurses and provide general practitioner postgraduate education allowance courses, accredited by local health authorities.
