Sir: I was glad to see Alex Callinicos' letter (7 December) in reply to Dave Aaronovitch's comment: had it not appeared I would have wondered where the man with the bizarre views who appeared on Newsnight had sprung from. Professor Callinicos, of the Socialist Workers' Party, had complained that the WTO represented "capitalism run wild" and saw the economic illiterates who paraded in Seattle as some global revolutionary force.

The demonstrators consisted largely of American trade unionists who were adamantly opposed to people in poor countries getting a share of the markets that they believe are theirs by right. Free trade is still not free enough, but is a great revolutionary force that has enabled some countries, with the wit to exploit its virtues, to export their way out of poverty.
