Sir: In the present debate about genetically altered food there seems to be a common belief that crops so treated will require fewer pesticides and weedkillers. This is not correct. Farmers will feel free to apply larger amounts in the knowledge that the crops themselves will be immune. Furthermore, pests and weeds are likely to adapt to the changed challenge and become more resistant.
