Sir: Ben Plowden, director of the Pedestrians Association (letter, 12 May) is quite right that the interests of pedestrians and cyclists are not identical. Some local authorities misunderstand the needs of both groups.
Brighton and Hove Council is probably not alone in thinking that a few signs and a white line painted parallel to the kerb is sufficient to designate part of the road as a "cycle lane". This does not prevent cars from being parked over the lane and results in cyclists having to move from the cambered and drain-ridden surface out into the main stream of traffic.
The cost of cycle lanes has to be much more than the cost of the paint. Substandard, un-enforced and interrupted cycle lanes are not worth having.
