Sir: So Milosevic wins again and only simpletons believe the West will hold him to his commitments. Nato proves a paper tiger and Blair, Jospin and Schroder show themselves as spineless and craven in the face of near- genocide as were their predecessors over Bosnia.

Thankfully such men were not governing in the 1940s. Then they would have fretted over the Holocaust as an issue involving German sovereignty, and doubtless recommended sending observers to Auschwitz to ensure conditions were not too inhumane.
