Sir: John V Lane says there is no excuse for taking someone's home away from them on financial grounds, and capitalism should not be allowed to go this far (letter, 10 December). But what would happen if the Government stopped repossessions? Tenants would stop paying rent, and owners would stop paying their mortgages. Great for these tenants and owners, but new tenancies and mortgages would stop overnight. This kind of socialist nonsense always ends up hurting the people it is designed to protect. You tamper with the foundations of capitalism at your peril.
