Sir: Steven Carr (letter, 18 November) is comparing two very different situations. The witnesses against Jesus were talking about current events, apparently very fresh in the memory, whereas the Gospels were written down some time after these events took place and are therefore subject to inevitable variations which occur in word-of-mouth history. In this case the significant point is that they agree so well.
