Sir: It was good to see the Beano and Dandy annuals billed as non-fiction in the latest Independent best-seller list (11 December).

After four decades, my trusting childhood faith in the reality of Dennis the Menace and the Bash Street Kids had slipped a little. Now comes proof that they are alive and well - though perhaps, like Jesus and Father Christmas, in a better world than this one.
