Sir: Your political correspondent Paul Waugh has a lively imagination. ("Tories in secret alliance talks with neo-fascists", 7 June).

Gianfranco Fini has never been to the European Foundation. I met him once over a year ago for a few minutes after he had addressed a breakfast meeting of businessmen in the City of London. There were no other Tories present. We have not spoken since, nor is there any communication between us. There is no deal.

It is hardly unknown that I do not agree with the federal objectives of the European People's Party (EPP) and in any case the Conservative Party is only loosely associated with the EPP.
