Sir: The debate in your letters pages about the reasons for low turnout in the Euro elections amuses me.
On the day of the elections I was moving into sheltered housing after a struggle to get it; negotiating with the NHS bureaucracy; trying to obtain from three agencies my minimal welfare rights as an OAP - which will be minimal in euros or pounds; visiting an aunt unhappy in a residential home; and fighting to stop Camden Council, abetted by Culture Secretary Chris Smith and ex-actress MP Glenda Jackson, from abolishing my local library (a more vital amenity than anything in Brussels or Strasbourg) in favour of what they call Best Value and Excellence.
No doubt others had their own more vivid and interesting problems.
