Letter: EU under scrutiny

Sir: The resignation of the EU Commissioners and the complaint, earlier in the week, by a butcher that after 20 years he would have to give up his business because of unnecessary and expensive alterations he would have to carry out at the behest of the EU would seem to have only a tenuous connection.I think otherwise.

If we have incompetence, dishonesty and nepotism at the top of the pyramid you can be sure that there exists further down a bureaucracy intent on empire building and endeavouring to justify its position by the issuing of fatuous regulations. We now have a heaven-sent opportunity to purge this bloated organisation.
