Sir: Andreas Whittam Smith's discussion of the effects of TV on violence (14 June) seems needlessly complex. If TV did not affect people's behaviour, no one would bother to advertise on it. There is no necessity to witness violence on TV. Its producers pander to those who want to watch it, since anyone else would turn it off. It will only decrease when enough people do just that.
