The 1999 Chelsea Festival opens with a concert by the Academy of St Martin-in- the-Fields, and the musical strand is reinforced by performances from the Philharmonia Orchestra with Julian Lloyd Webber, the Russian Konevets Choral Quartet and jazz singer Marion Montgomery, among others. The Independent's gardening writer Anna Pavord hosts a talk with Mary Quant and Sir Terence Conran as part of the gardens slot, which upholds the tradition of opening private gardens to the public, while Sheridan Morley hosts a talk about Noel Coward in the playwright's centenary year. All this plus a fashion show, "millinery extravaganza" (right), exhibitions and artists' open studios.
