Marvel’s Spider-Man, released on PlayStation 4 consoles in 2018, is being technically and graphically remastered for the PS5, which is set to hit shelves this November.
A new trailer for the remaster reveals that the facial model for Peter Parker (aka Spider-Man) has been completely recast
According to Insomniac, the game’s developer, the move was undertaken so Peter Parker’s face would better match the motion capture provided by the character’s voice and mo-cap actor, Yuri Lowenthal.
However, many fans on social media took objection to the change, with many commenting that the new-look Peter Parker was too close to Tom Holland, the actor who portrays the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films. In fact, the new face is that of a model named Ben Jordan.
“I get the need to change actors to better fit Yuri’s performance, but can you please make him look less like a movie tie-in Tom Holland?” asked one commenter. “Insomniac’s take was their unique Peter Parker, and having him look like a pre-existing version is just... weird, man.”
“Lol imagine being the actor for peter parker on PS4 and being told that your face isn’t next-gen enough,” joked another.
Many commented that the new Peter looked younger than before.
“Pretty ballsy change by Insomniac,” wrote one commenter. “I kinda rock with new Pete even though he looks a bit too young considering he's supposed to be in his mid-twenties.”
Bryan Intihar, the creative director at Insomniac Games, posted a statement which read: “Today's news about the new Peter Parker face model has surprised some of you, and we at Insomniac totally understand your reaction.
“But as we discussed the franchise's future and moving to the PS5, it quickly became apparent that delivering even more believable-looking characters made finding a better facial match for actor Yuri Lowenthal.
“I hope you can trust us that this decision is what we feel is best for the future of the franchise,” he added.
