Tribeca Film Festival announces who's coming for the premieres

Among the films by respected international directors and documentaries from 38 countries around the world, the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival will kick off with the premiere of S hrek Forever After in 3D. Stars showing up on the red carpet at the annual event, April 21-May 2 in lower Manhattan, include Colin Farrell, Casey Affleck, Jessica Alba, and Robert Duvall.

The festival announced the non-competition lineup of films which includes new works by Academy Award-winning filmmakers Neil Jordan and Chuck Workman, and feature films with actors Tilda Swinton, Liev Schreiber, Eddie Izzard, Kim Cattrall, Rashida Jones, Melissa Leo, and James Franco.

For the first time, audiences have the opportunity to experience the festival virtually from home through video-on-demand in more than 40 million US households. Nice Guy Johnny, a new film from actor/director Edward Burns, will be one of the 12 full-length films debuting simultaneously at the festival and virtually (www.tribecafilm.com/virtual).

The following are some of the many highlights:
There are documentaries about iconic hair stylist Vidal Sassoon, outrageous comedian Joan Rivers, and the directorial debut of supermodel Christy Turlington Burns with No Woman, No Cry about women's pregnancy issues in Africa, Guatemala, Bangladesh and the US, and Oscar-winner Alex Gibney premiering My Trip to Al-Qaeda.

Several highlights of the narrative features being presented include:
• Neil Jordan's mermaid movie Ondine starring with Colin Farrell
• Mat Whitecross's Ian Dury biopic Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll with Andy Serkis
• Shinya Tsukamoto's new installment of 20-year-old Tetsuo tale, Tetsuo the Bullet Man
• Snowmen with Ray Liotta and Christopher Lloyd
• Michael Winterbottom's The Killer Inside Me with Casey Affleck and Kate Hudson
• Every Day by Richard Levine with Liev Schreiber, Helen Hunt, Brian Dennehy, Carla Gugino, and Eddie Izzard.

Also, an ESPN sports film section of the festival includes the following:
• The Birth of Big Air, about BMX biker Mat Hoffman. Produced by Spike Jonze and Johnny Knoxville.
• Into the Cold, by environmentalist Sebastian Copeland about reaching the North Pole.
• Keep Surfing, by Bjoern Richie Lob (Germany) about river-surfing in Munich.
• Last Play at Shea about Billy Joel's concert in the final days of Shea Stadium
• Straight Outta L.A. by actor/rapper Ice Cube about the LA Raiders football team.
• The Two Escobars, by Jeff Zimbalist, Michael Zimbalist about unrelated soccer player Andrés Escobar and drug lord Pablo Escobar.

For its 45th anniversary, there is a screening of the restored Doctor Zhivago, David Lean's Russian Revolution epic, based on Boris Pasternak's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and a 1965 Oscar winner starring Omar Sharif, Julie Christie, Geraldine Chaplin, Rod Steiger, Alec Guinness, and Tom Courtenay.

Established by Robert De Niro and colleagues in 2003, the Tribeca Film Festival is New York City's chance to see films that have played at Sundance or SXSW festivals. It will feature 45 World Premieres and 14 North American premieres in the program by established and emerging talent and include conversations with the filmmakers.
