Three major movie trailers débuted during September 28-October 4, including previews for American director Martin Scorsese's thriller Shutter Island, and English-subtitled trailers for both Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar's noir romance Broken Embraces ( Los Abrazos Rotos) and Chinese director John Woo's war epic Red Cliff ( Chi Bi).
Shutter Island, originally scheduled for a release this month, was moved by Paramount Pictures during the summertime to a February 19, 2010 release date. Scorsese's first dark thriller since 1991's Cape Fear, Shutter Island stars American actor Leonardo DiCaprio and is based on the 2003 novel of the same name by American author Dennis Lehane. The plot involves a US marshal's investigation into an island prison for the criminally insane. Last week's new Shutter Island trailer is Paramount's second.
DiCaprio works with Scorsese for the fourth time with Shutter Island, and Broken Embraces is likewise Oscar-winning actress Penélope Cruz's fourth film with Pedro Almodóvar. Filmed in homage to the American 1950s film noir style, Broken Embraces opened wide in Spain in March and begins a limited US release on November 20. The movie deals with a complicated and dangerous four-way romance.
Finally, John Woo's Red Cliff receives an English-subtitled trailer. Famous to Anglophone cinephiles for 1990s action films like Mission: Impossible II and Face/Off, Woo released Red Cliff in two parts in Asia, totaling over four hours. The historical war film takes place in ancient China during the Battle of Red Cliffs. Part one of Red Cliff was first released in July 2008 in China; part two came six months later during January 2009. Red Cliff makes its American début on November 13.
