Yella (12A)

This disquieting parable about trust and risk wrong-foots us at every turn. Fleeing her psychotic ex-husband, who has tried to kill her by driving his car off a bridge, Yella (Nina Hoss) takes an ad hoc role as assistant to a dodgy venture capitalist (Devid Striesow) who uses her accounting skills to outmanoeuvre his business rivals. But Yella is haunted by strange sounds and the ever-present threat of the unhinged ex.

Writer-director Christian Petzold brilliantly blurs the line between what we think is happening and the possibility that something altogether darker is taking place. Nina Hoss, with her brittle demeanour and anguished stare, keeps us guessing as to what tricks fate might have in store for her.
