Wrinkles, film review: Defiance and humour reminiscent of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Wrinkles portrays old-timers trying to cope with deteriorating health and trying to keep their dignity

We are so used to cartoon features aimed at kids that an animated film set in a care home for the elderly comes as a complete surprise.

There is a bleakness at the heart of Wrinkles. The residents, abandoned by their children, face memory loss and eventually death.

Nonetheless, in its portrayal of old-timers trying to cope with deteriorating health and trying to keep their dignity as they fight back against an uncaring institution, the film has a defiance and humour reminiscent of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. It's far more uplifting than its subject matter might suggest.
