Marc Forster swaps the feyness of Finding Neverland for the screaming abdabs of a New York psycho-thriller in which minimum sense competes with maximum pretension. Ewan McGregor plays a psychiatrist inheriting the case of a disturbed young man (Ryan Gosling) who's threatened to kill himself on the eve of his 21st birthday.
Instead of helping his patient, however, McGregor somehow finds himself in the middle of a fugue where dream and reality have become intermingled. How come the doc is suddenly assailed by fragments of his patient's consciousness? What is his girlfriend Naomi Watts' role in this? And why does McGregor wear trousers that end halfway up his shins? Is that why they call him a shrink?
