The highlight of this "fairy tale for adults" is Robert De Niro's turn as a timber-shivering pirate who's privately a sensitive soul with a taste for dressing up en travesti. You can't help being impressed that somebody managed to talk him into it. Otherwise, it's a meandering, self-indulgent affair, squandering vast amounts of acting talent but short on charm, logic or emotional traction.
