Being an American indie film, Sherrybaby has a minimum of plot, but it's a sharply observed and uncompromising character study: the world may make things difficult for someone who wants to go straight, but the resentful, short-tempered and attention-seeking heroine makes things even more difficult for herself. It's worth seeing for an astonishing performance from Gyllenhaal, and an even better one from Ryan Simpkins, the seven-year-old who plays her daughter.
