The man to thank is David Zucker, who may have directed the so-so Scary Movie 3, but who was also responsible for Airplane! and The Naked Gun. He's much closer to his old form here. However, unlike Airplane! etc, SM4 insists on spoofing specific recent films, rather than entire genres, so if you haven't seen War of the Worlds, The Village, The Grudge, Saw and Million Dollar Baby, you'll be scratching your head.
