For a more enlightening view of Europe, try Paris, je t'aime, an anthology of 18 "little neighbourhood romances", each made by a different director and set in a different Paris arrondissement. The Coen brothers, Alexander Payne, Wes Craven and Gus Van Sant are on the directors' list, and their stars include Juliette Binoche, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Steve Buscemi, Natalie Portman and Elijah Wood. But just as a tray of canapés is never as satisfying as a meal, the bite-sized running times leave you hungry for more. Each segment either fits neatly into five minutes, in which case it seems slight and gimmicky, or else it's more substantial, and five minutes aren't enough.
