Using a static camera, Depardon interviews his subjects – taciturn old farmers and their wives, y et also a younger generation hoping to work the land – in an oblique fashion, prompting with a question but also letting silences linger. Gallic shrugs also feature heavily. The beauty of the landscape presents a troubling counterpoint to the harsh, hazardous nature of the farming, and sometimes it's the gnarled contours of a face that speak more eloquently than words.
