The cracks are really beginning to show in this animated franchise, despite the smart ensemble voicework of Ray Romano (the woolly mammoth), Denis Leary (the sabre-toothed tiger) and John Leguizamo (the sloth).
The dialogue has gone to autopilot on the jokes, while the anxieties of the characters – survival, status, separation from the herd – are no longer persuasively felt.
Scrat the silent rodent and his pursuit of the elusive acorn still offers the funniest routines on show; the rest is suffering a terminal case of the cutes.
