Director Adam Wingard's previous film was called A Horrible Way to Die, which fairly encapsulates the spirit of his new one.

We're back in home-invasion territory as a well-off family gather in dad's country retreat for a reunion: they've just started bickering at the dinner table when a steel arrow flies through the window and skewers one of their number through the head. Cue an outbreak of screaming and running.

Why the assailants' white animal masks should be scarier than their swords and axes I don't quite know – but they are. Wingard organises the stalk'n'slash sequences with heartless efficiency, and finds in Australian actress Sharni Vinson a very game leader of the counterattack – and inventive, too. Death by electric blender was a new one on me.
