A film that was always going to bring a tear to the eye – for lead actress Kate Winslet as she accepted her Bafta and Oscar trophies.
It would be churlish to fault Winslet's performance, but there is little here that does not scream: FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION! It is all a bit too cerebral and lacks that punch to the gut one might expect of a movie about a former concentration camp guard. It certainly makes you think about complicity in the Holocaust, but it doesn't really make you feel.
