Matthew McConaughey is typically smug in this hard-boiled LA crime story, but for once the smugness suits his character, a fast-talking attorney who specialises in getting guilty clients off on technicalities.
Adapted from Michael Connelly's novel, it feels less like a film than a TV pilot – despite the casting of Marisa Tomei and William H Macy – but it's sleek, assured, and downright entertaining.
