Clint Eastwood's intriguing biopic of J Edgar Hoover starts as a snappy gangster movie, with the eager young FBI chief (Leonardo DiCaprio) punching a hole in organised crime.
But it loses its way as it plods through several more decades of its subject's life, just as DiCaprio gets lost under several pounds of prosthetic old-man make-up. It's also undecided about Hoover's romance/ friendship with his lieutenant (Armie Hammer).
