This bare-knuckle boxing drama stars Channing Tatum as a quick-fisted Alabama lunk and Terrence Howard as the hustler with a heart who mentors him.
Both men turn in soulful performances, and the director charges New York with the energy and edginess that it had in the days of Midnight Cowboy and Taxi Driver. But beneath the film's scuffed exterior, it's an old-fashioned fairy tale perpetuating the dubious idea that handsome white men are the world's best boxers.
