There are moments of great tenderness in Richard Attenborough's elegiac melodrama that shifts between Michigan during the Second World War and Belfast during the Troubles.

Shirley MacLaine plays a feisty widow hiding a crucial part of her past from daughter Neve Campbell; in flashback MacLaine is played by Mischa Barton.

It would be a flinty heart indeed that fails to be touched by the rheumy-eyed playing of MacLaine and her co-star Christopher Plummer.
