In 1978, a French artist called Hugues de Montalembert was mugged in New York, and one of his attackers blinded him permanently by throwing paint remover into his eyes. Black Sun is an inspiring account of how he adjusted to his new life, and how he went on to become a best-selling writer. The film's British director Gary Tarn interviewed de Montalembert, then edited his answers into a monologue which Tarn underscored with his own electronic music and with a montage of footage from around the world. The result is an innovative work of art that provides all the facts and anecdotes of a conventional documentary, but which immerses them in a mesmeric ambience all of its own.
