From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Idris Elba will present at the Oscars this Sunday—the academy has confirmed.

Elba is best known for his Emmy award-winning performance in BBC One’s Luther and lead role in the Oscar-nominated Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.

The actor recently starred in the 2014 thriller No Good Deed and his latest project Beasts of No Nation is slated for release this year.

Last December, the prospect of Elba playing James Bond caused a stir following the Sony Hacks leak.

It has yet to be confirmed which category the British actor will present, but Elba will join fellow presenters Jason Bateman, Ansel Elgort, Nicole Kidman, Liam Neeson, Gwyneth Paltrow and Channing Tatum.

Bateman has starred in Oscar-nominated films Juno and Up in the Air.

Elgort is an up-and-coming actor who has starred in the book-to-film adaptations Divergent and The Fault in Our Stars.

Kidman, Neeson, and Paltrow have all received acting nominations at previous ceremonies, with Kidman earning worst actress for her performance in Grace of Monaco at the Barfta Awards.

Tatum recently played an Olympic wrestler in Foxcatcher, which received five Oscar nominations this year in categories including Best Actor and Best Director.

The 87th Academy Awards will air on 22 February on Sky’s pop-up channel Sky Movies Oscars.
