When previously asked whether Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine would feature in X-Men Apocalypse, director Bryan Singer said the character would not appear in the film.

However, thanks to the third and final trailer, we seemingly had confirmation he would appear in the film alongside the likes of Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique and Michael Fassbender’s Magneto.

Since the trailer was released, Singer has thrown a spanner into the works, saying the trailer cameo may not be all that it seems.

“I will say, it’s not simple,” he told Empire. “There’s something more pivotal that occurs with that. It hints to a sequence that again fits within the canon of all six movies, and the birth of a new direction.

“It’s not insignificant, nor is it simply just a throw-in. It’s not the only shot you’re gonna see, let’s put it that way.”

If the cameo isn’t as simple as Hugh Jackman rolling up, clawing a few enemies, then what is going on? Are we going to see a new character (“the birth of a new direction”)?

Rumours about another mutant taking over as Wolverine have been swelling in recent weeks, with many pointing to the comic book character X-23 taking over. In the source material, X-23 is a female clone of Logan who eventually takes over the Wolverine name when he dies.

In the same interview, Singer also spoke about Quicksilver’s parentage, saying “it wasn’t meant to be a big deal, it’s not like Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. We know the deal. The question is, who else knows it and what does it mean and how does it inform how Quicksilver has evolved as a character? It’s part of his journey right to the end of this film.”

X-Men Apocalypse hits UK cinemas 18 May.
