Wonder Woman 1984 to be released on HBO Max and in cinemas on same day
DC film will arrive in cinemas and the Warner-owned streaming service on 25 December, and on 16 December internationally
Wonder Woman 1984 is to be released in cinemas and on streaming service HBO Max on the same day, it has been announced.
The superhero sequel, which has been delayed multiple times due to coronavirus, will finally make its debut in the US on 25 December 2020, Variety reports.
In countries where HBO Max isn’t available, it will be released in cinemas on 16 December.
Speaking about the film’s release, director Patty Jenkins said that “the time has come”.
“At some point you have to choose to share any love and joy you have to give, over everything else,” she said. "We love our movie as we love our fans, so we truly hope that our film brings a little bit of joy and reprieve to all of you this holiday season.
"Watch it in theatres, where it is made safe to do so (check out the great work theatres have done to make it so!) And available in the safety of your home on HBO Max where it is not. Happy holidays to all of you. We hope you enjoy our film as much as we enjoyed making it.”
As previously reported, the sequel, which follows Jenkins' 2017 Wonder Woman film and stars Gal Gadot, has been subject to many delays over the course of the Covid-19 pandemic, having been originally scheduled for release in 2019 and was subsequently pushed to 5 June 2020.
It was later moved to 14 August, 2 October, and most recently — as of September — 25 December.
“First and foremost let me say how much Gal and I love all our devoted Wonder Woman fans around the world, and your excitement for WW84 couldn’t make us happier or more eager for you to see the movie," Jenkins said at the time.
