From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

It's been an incredible year for Universal Studios. Not only have they scored the third, fifth and twenty-third highest grossing films of all time with Jurassic World, Furious 7 and Minions, but they’ve managed to have spectacular run with Straight out of Compton, which currently sits at number one on the US box office.

The same cannot be said for Warner Bros, whose year seems to have gone from brilliant to catastrophic.

Having started off on good form with Mad Max: Fury Road and San Andreas, the studio has stumbled this summer, with recent releases The Man From U.N.C.L.E and Vacation failing to light up the box office.

Adding to this downward spiral is the Zac Efron starring We Are Your Friends. The film, which opened in 2,333 cinemas, debuted with a gross of $1.8 million in the US, making it the worst opening of all time for a new Hollywood studio film opening in over 2,000 theatres, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In comparison, Jurassic World had a debut weekend of $208.8 million, or 116 times what Friends made.

Starring Efron, Emily Ratajkowski and Shiloh Fernandez, Friends tells the story of a 23-year-old wannabe DJ and his rise to the top of the EDM world.

Perhaps contributing to the low turnout for Friends is that Eden, a film marking the rise of pioneering French DJ was also released in the US this year. Unlike Friends, Eden was a critical success.

Warner Bros will be hoping to turn things around this September, with both Black Mass and The Intern opening in cinemas in consecutive weeks.

We Are Your Friends is in UK cinemas now.
