Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

YouTube has announced the lineup for a new film festival co-curated by organisers from Cannes, Sundance and Tribeca.

We Are One: A Global Film Festival begins on Friday (29 May) and will make more than 100 films available to watch for free.

Other festivals to have helped out with the film selection include Berlin, Venice and Toronto. The programme will be updated daily.

“We are so excited to share the combined efforts of our festival partners and YouTube with the world this week,” Tribeca Enterprises and Tribeca Film Festival Co-Founder and CEO Jane Rosenthal said in a statement.

“Together, we were able to curate a compelling slate of programming that succinctly reflects the subtle variations in style that make each festival so special. We Are One: A Global Film Festival will offer audiences an opportunity to not only celebrate the art of film, but the unique qualities that make each story we watch so memorable.”

More than 35 countries are represented in the lineup, which includes 23 narrative films, eight documentary films and more than 70 documentaries.

Also available to watch for free will be numerous one-on-one chats with directors, including Francis Ford Coppola and Steven Soderbergh, Jane Campion and Claire Denis and Bong Joon-ho and his Parasite lead, Song Kang-ho.

The festival runs on YouTube from 29 May to 7 June and is available to stream here.

All funds raised during the festival will benefit Covid-19 relief funds.
