Last year, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man debuted in Captain America: Civil War, thus introducing the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s very own web-slinger.

Getting Spider-Man into the MCU wasn’t easy, though: the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming - which features Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man - will be distributed by both studios with rumoured contract clauses detailing certain requirements to be fulfilled by both studios.

What’s made things even more complicated is Sony’s enduring endeavour to keep producing Spider-Man spin-offs that aren’t related to Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.

For instance, the Sinister Six film teased in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was only cancelled months after the Marvel deal was announced.

Now, Sony has announced the release date for Venom, the Spider-Man villain who predominantly featured in the third Tobey Maguire blockbuster.

The studio has scheduled the film for an 18 December 2018 release slot, the spot previously held by the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo sequel. DC’s Aquaman reaches cinemas 21 December that year - it’s going to be a superhero filled Christmas.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner recently turned in a script for the film, the latter writer having also working on The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Sony apparently hope Venom will launch an entire franchise, probably including the once rumoured Aunt May solo-film. Whatever the case, expect casting in the near future.
