The sequel to Sony’s Venom film has been given a new title and release date.

Venom, which starred Tom Hardy as the titular character and Spider-Man comic book villain, was released in October 2018 and was a huge box office success, grossing $856 million.

A sequel was announced just three month’s later, with Hardy confirmed to return alongside co-star Michelle Williams and Woody Harrelson, who was introduced as the character of Cletus Kasady in a mid-credits scene.

In the Marvel comics, Kasady merges with a symbiote to become Carnage, who is referenced in the sequel’s new title, Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

The upcoming film, which is set to be directed by Andy Serkis, was previously referred to simply as “Venom 2”.

It was due for an October 2020 release, but a Twitter announcement on Tuesday revealed the movie will now hit cinemas on 25 June 2021 due to delays caused by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The new release date was previously occupied by DC’s upcoming film The Batman, which will star Robert Pattinson as the caped crusader.

The Matt Reeves-directed project will now be released on 1 October 2021, it was announced on Monday.
