From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

It seems like work is finally underway on Top Gun 2.

Yesterday, producing powerhouse Jerry Bruckheimer posted a photo on Twitter alongside Maverick himself, Tom Cruise, confirming that the pair got together to "discuss" the film.

The long-gestating sequel to the 1986 blockbuster was officially confirmed last June after decades of rumours.

David Ellison, CEO of Skydance, previously told Collider: "There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie... there is no Top Gun without Maverick."

Val Kilmer is expected to reprise his role of Lt. Tom "Iceman" Kazansky for the sequel but it is unknown whether actress Kelly McGillis will return, despite formerly expressing an interest in doing so.

Justin Marks is currently writing a script for the sequel, with nobody yet attached to direct. The original film's director Tony Scott (True Romance, Enemy of the State) tragically died in 2012.

It was recently announced that Cruise - who last year starred in fifth Mission: Impossible film, Rogue Nation - will star in Universal's reboot of The Mummy franchise, due out June 2017.
