With another stab at breaking the video game curse about to hit cinemas, the Michael Fassbender-starring Assassin's Creed, the planned Tomb Raider reboot appears to be moving nicely along.

With Alicia Vikander beating out Daisy Ridley for the titular role, Variety now reports Walton Goggins is in final talks to join the film as its main villain. Goggins is probably most recognisable for his role in this year's Quentin Tarantino offering, The Hateful Eight; though he's also stacked up roles in Predators, Sons of Anarchy, and Justified.

The reboot promises to "tell the story of a young and untested Croft fighting to survive her first adventure", seemingly working as an adaptation of the 2013 reboot of the game; which re-established the origins of Croft and revamped the series with a grittier, more realistic feel.

That will at least allow for a fresh break from its cinematic predecessors: the Angelina Jolie-starring 2001 film, and its critically-maligned 2003 sequel, The Cradle of Life.

The film's release date was recently pushed back to a March 2018 slot, which had previously been saved for an untitled DC film thought to have been The Flash solo film; which has yet to be secured with a release date.

Vikander was last seen in The Danish Girl alongside Eddie Redmayne, a role for which she won an Oscar. In 2016, the actor will star in Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne and The Light Between Oceans, alongside Michael Fassbender and Rachel Weisz.

Tomb Raider hits UK cinemas 16 March 2018.
