Superheroes are starting to look distinctly... buggy of late. Following Spider-Man and Ant-Man's grand return to screens with Captain America: Civil War, superhero spoof The Tick is about to make a major comeback.
Based on the Ben Edlund comic, The Tick TV series aired but nine episodes on Fox in late 2001, but has garnered an ever-expanding cult fanbase ever since. Which is probably why Amazon's stepped in to order the pilot for a rebooted version of the show (via Deadline), both written and executive produced by Edlund himself; who was also responsible for the original series.
The pilot's also landed Transcendence-director Wally Pfister; interesting, considering he's best known as a frequent cinematographer for Christopher Nolan and worked on all three of his Batman movies. Is Edlund hoping to riff on the current superhero genre's obsession with dark/gritty reboots? It would certainly be a fun way to update the character for modern trends.
However, both Patrick Warburton and David Burke (who played The Tick and Arthur respectively) will not be returning for the new series; though Warburton will act as executive producer, Edlund is hoping for an all new cast for the reboot.
The Tick himself is yet to be cast, though some actors have already been announced: Vinyl's Griffin Newman will play sidekick Arthur and House of Lies' Valorie Curry will play Arthur's sister Dot. Brand new characters have also been planned.
The reboot will see the antennae-sporting hero dealing with memory loss, which eventually sees him teaming with Arthur to fight evil, a man now labeled as a schizophrenic for his claims that the city is in danger.
