From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Only Guillermo del Toro could spin such a beautiful love story between a woman and merman.

The first trailer for his latest project, The Shape of Water, is something truly gorgeous to behold. Set against the backdrop of 1963 Cold War America, the film stars Sally Hawkins as a mute woman working at a high-security government laboratory, desperately craving companionship.

That all changes when she discovers what's being held within the lab, a merman-like creature who seems to possess incredible human characteristics.

The pair form a deep connection, at odds with the creature's ruthless keepers; if there's any director on earth who could get a cinematic audience to cheer on a hook-up between a woman and a part-fish, part-man creature, it's certainly the wildly passionate and imaginative director of Crimson Peak and Pan's Labyrinth.

The film also stars Michael Shannon, Octavia Spencer, Richard Jenkins, and Michael Stuhlbarg, with Doug Jones as the creature. It's not the first merman Jones has played for del Toro, having filled in the role of Abe Sapien in the Hellboy films, though David Hyde Pierce provided the voice.

The Shape of Water hits UK cinemas 16 February 2018.
