Marvel’s The Punisher is set to return sooner than expected.

Netflix unveiled the trailer for the series’s second season on Thursday, announcing its release date in the clip.

The Punisher‘s second instalment was originally predicted to air around mid-2019, but it is now scheduled to premiere much sooner than that, on 18 January.

The trailer released by Netflix focuses heavily on Jon Bernthal’s character, Frank Castle, aka the Punisher.

Netflix’s synopsis for the forthcoming second season reads as such: “Former marine-turned-vigilante Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) has been living a quiet life on the road until he suddenly becomes embroiled in the attempted murder of a young girl (Giorgia Whigham).

“As he is drawn into the mystery surrounding her and those in pursuit of the information she holds, Castle attracts a new target on his back as new and old enemies force him to confront whether he should accept his destiny and embrace a life as ‘The Punisher.’”

The season two announcement comes as Netflix has cancelled three of its Marvel shows: Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist all ended in 2018.

The series of cancellations has led some to believe The Punisher might suffer the same fate in the future.

Bernthal, who previously appeared as Shane Walsh in The Walking Dead, has said that he wants to keep playing his character for as long as possible.

“For me, it’s not about — I have no aspirations or desire to do anything besides what I’m doing," he said at ACE Comic Con last year according to Comicbook.com.

"I love this character, I believe in him, he’s in my bones, I feel honoured to play him, and I want to keep playing him."
