From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Ever wanted to watch Jason Statham take on a gigantic, extinct species of shark? Well, you’re in luck as the first trailer for The Meg has landed, showcasing what’s basically an updated version of Jaws with much (much) more CGI.

“A deep-sea submersible – part of an international undersea observation program – has been attacked by a massive creature, previously thought to be extinct, and now lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest trench in the Pacific… with its crew trapped inside,” reads the synopsis.

Luckily, expert deep-sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (the Stath) has been called in to save the crew “and the ocean itself” from the pre-historic 75-foot-long beast, the Megalodon (hence the name of the movie).

Cast members include Rainn Wilson (The Office), Ruby Rose (Orange is the New Black), Winston Chao, and Li Bingbing, among many more. Jon Turteltaub – best known for helming National Treasure – will produce the movie.

Meanwhile, the background dancer turned leading actor, Statham, recently appeared in The Fate of the Furious/Fast and Furious 8, and will feature in the spin-off Hobbs and Shaw alongside The Rock.

The Meg reaches cinemas 10 August.
