From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The Irishman has taken one step forward in the Oscars race after being crowned best film of the year by the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures.

Martin Scorsese’s film was announced as the top winner on Tuesday, while Quentin Tarantino was crowned best director of the year.

While the National Board of Review doesn’t always see eye to eye with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which is in charge of the Oscars, the movie Green Book won on both sides.

Peter Farrelly’s biographical comedy-drama won the National Board of Review’s best film of the year award in November 2018, about three months before taking Best Picture at the Academy Awards.

This indicates that The Irishman, which could earn Netflix its first-ever Best Picture Oscar, is making a strong entry in this year’s awards race.

Adam Sandler was picked by the National Board of Review as best actor for his role in Uncut Gems, while Renée Zellweger won the best actress award for her performance in Judy.

Brad Pitt earned the best supporting actor prize for Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood and Kathy Bates won in the best supporting actress category for Richard Jewell.

A gala honouring the winners will be held on 8 January, 2020 in New York City.

In 2017, the National Board of Review picked The Post as the best film of the year, while the Best Picture Oscar went to The Shape of Water.

Manchester by the Sea won the National Board of Review’s top award the previous year, while Moonlight was crowned Best Picture by the Academy.
