With the trailer for Matt Reeves’ take on the superhero franchise debuting at the DC FanDome event on Saturday (22 August), many fans had been eagerly anticipating a first look at Robert Pattinson’s take on the caped crusader.
However, it was Farrell and his transformation into villain The Penguin that left viewers particularly stunned, with many refusing to believe that the Irish actor was beneath the prosthetics.
“Wait is Twitter messing with me or is this really Colin Farrell as Penguin in The Batman trailer,” one viewer questioned. “If so this is one of the best transformation makeups I’ve ever seen?”
Another wrote: “Really thought this was Richard Kind in The Batman trailer but it’s Colin Farrell in Penguin makeup.”
On Monday (24 August), Mike Marino, the make-up artist on The Batman, confirmed that Farrell did appear in the trailer. He shared a picture of the transformation to his Instagram page using the hashtags: “#colinfarrell”, “#batman” and “sfx”.
One commenter responded: “Damn bro. The quality of your work is unreal. And I KNOW it’s gonna go down in the history books of cinema.”
“I’m so blown away by this make up,” another fan commented. “Congrats to you and the team!! Excited for this! Excited to see a good year of great projects from Proren in 2021!! Gonna be a good year for ya!”
In July, Farrell praised the script for The Batman and said it is unlike any previous adaptations.
“The whole prospect is really exciting,” he said. “I’m ecstatic to be part of that universe. There are certain words that are part of my internal lexicon and those words are Gotham City, Penguin, Joker, Batman, Bruce Wayne, Harvey Dent... all of those things.”
The movie, which will begin filming again in early September, also stars Zoe Kravitz and Paul Dano.
